Topic: Developing the Next Generation of Talent

Event Sponsor: NFP with Joe Finzel

In today’s environment as HR professionals, we need to look at non-traditional ways to attract, develop, and retain our talent as well as build a pool of future talent.  The old ways of “post and pray” are not as effective as they used to be, and we need to start thinking “outside the box” and going out and attracting and training upcoming talent ourselves.  To do this, we must be active participants in building and developing future talent and leaders.  A great way to do this is to sponsor interns and apprentices!  Many graduating high school students are not taking the traditional path to college and as our workforce is maturing, we need to help develop and teach graduating students so they can take the reins as our workforce moves to the next adventure in their life…retirement.

Work and learn programs provide both employers and individuals the opportunity to learn more about their field or profession of interest so they can decide if that is really something they wish to pursue or let them know early they may want to change course.  Employers will reap the benefits of these programs by taking an active part in providing training and development of these up-and-coming talent, to mold them with the work habits and job knowledge we would like to see as they graduate and enter the workforce.

In this session you will learn:

  • The difference between an apprenticeship and an internship and how it applies to different employers over different types of industries.
  • Local apprenticeship programs, their purpose, and the specific requirements for an employer who is taking on an apprentice.
  • Understand how to become a “go to” employer for students to come for work and learn opportunities?
  • How to host a successful apprenticeship or internship programs for a win/win outcome for the employer and the participant. What are best practices for making a work and learn program productive for both the employer and the apprentice/intern.
  • What type of support is available from your state and/or local governments for apprenticeship and/or internship program and how to apply for an apprenticeship or internship through your local department of labor and what resources are available to employers?

This meeting is open to Carroll County SHRM members and non-members within the business community and/or HR profession.

This meeting will provide opportunity to earn continuing education credit and to network with your peers.
